Although they do not hit as hard as regular attack cards the poison attacks will drain health and deal damage over time as they siphon health from your opponent and deliver it to you. This extra health will come in useful when you need strength for a final decisive attack.
A good choice for beginner players is Boat Head the giant crab as he brings in extra tokens with each victory which makes entering draws for new cards easier. Sacrifice cards that you don't use in battle to level him up faster than the other monsters.
Don't play any of your best cards in a blind situation unless you are confident it will do a lot of damage.
Although you can see what card your opponent will play with every second turn you will need to rely on intuition on your 'blind' turns. Try to play a card that will prompt your opponent to counter with something relatively weak.
Be aware that whenever your opponent plays a card that has a stronger element than you their attack will become twice as powerful while yours will be cut in half.
The key to being successful is to take advantage of the elemental strengths and weaknesses. Each of your cards is associated with an element and this is represented by the colour of their boarder (red, green, blue, and yellow). Red trumps green but is weak against blue. Green trumps yellow but is weak against red. Yellow trumps blue but is weak against green. And blue trumps red but is weak against yellow.
You can speed up the battle animations by turning off the mini-game prompts, this can be done by tapping the small circular icon at the upper left-hand side of the screen.
