Items

In Mario Kart 8, there are a total of 20 items; 4 of which are new to the series. Each item gives the player a certain advantage on other players. Some items are attacking, some are defensive & some are aiding items. The new items to the series are the boomerang flower, the piranha plant, the super horn & the crazy 8. Here is a list of all items in the game & their functions:

Green Shell - An offensive item which can be used to hit another racer & stop them in their tracks.
Triple Green Shells - 3 green shells that can be used at once of separately. They will orbit the player until used.
Red Shell - An offensive item which homes in on the racer in front of you & hits them.
Triple Red Shells - 3 red shells that can be used at once of separately. Will orbit the player until used.
Banana - An offensive & defensive item. Can be thrown forward or back or held at the back of the player's kart to defend from shells.
Triple Bananas - 3 bananas which can be used separately or at once. They will orbit the player until used.
Mushroom - An aiding item which gives the player a speed boost.
Triple Mushrooms - 3 mushrooms which can be used separately or at once. Will orbit the player until used.
Golden Mushroom - A powerful mushroom which can give the player many speed boosts in a short period of time.
Fire Flower - An offensive item which throws fireballs which can hit players & stop them in their tracks.
Star - An offensive, defensive & aiding item which leaves the player invincible, faster & able to hit players & stop them.
Blooper - An offensive item which throws ink on other player's screens.
Bob-omb - An offensive item which creates an explosion. Players caught in the explosion will be stopped.
Spiny Shell - An offensive item which travels along the ground, up to the player in 1st & explodes around them.
Lightning - An offensive item which makes all players except the player holding the item go slammer; becoming slower. A star or bullet bill can block out this item.
Bullet Bill - An offensive, defensive & aiding item which makes the player travel much faster & guides the player along for them.
Boomerang Flower - An offensive item which allows the player to throw 3 boomerangs at players.
Piranha Plant - An offensive & aiding item which gives the player short speed boosts while attacking players nearby.
Super Horn - An offensive & defensive item which sends out a shockwave, hitting players & incoming items. This item can also be used to destroy an incoming blue shell.
Crazy 8 - Awards the player with a coin, a blooper, star, mushroom, shell, red shell, bob-omb & a banana.
