Mario Kart Wii Guide - Drifting and Snaking
Manual Versus Automatic
Very simple. Manual means you'll have to put your car into a drift manually with the jump button. If you don't, you'll lose speed around corners and your turning radius will be huge.
Automatic will automatically put your car into a drift around every corner. Pro here is that you don't have to worry about it. However, it can make it harder to snake. Wii Wheel is pretty much the only controller you should set to automatic.
Drifting
Drifting is crucial to even the most inexperienced player. If you don't drift at all, you wont win any races. Ever. Drifting means to put your car into a drift around a corner. Doing this saves your speed and tightens your turning radius.
If you have it set to Manual and you drift long enough, you can get a short burst of speed.

The longer you hold it, the more of a boost you get (it'll even turn orange).
To get longer boosts, jump and start drifting into the curve, then pull in the opposite direction of the curve while still drifting. Turing with the curve will sharpen the curve, turning against will widen it. Using this, you can control your position on the track and keep from falling off, thereby prolonging your drift and eventual boost.
Snaking
Remember the above. Snaking is much harder in this game then in the DS version.
The concept of snaking is pretty easy, but it takes a lot of practice to actually see results.
To snake, you basically drift constantly, even on straight-aways. To do this, start on one side of the track (lets say left) and start drifting to the opposite (which would be right). Now pull back towards the left to prevent from pulling a 180 or crashing off the right side. By they time you reach the right side of the track, you should have been able to build up a boost. Let it rip and immediately start on your next drift toward the opposite edge again.
Snaking gets it name from the snake-like movement this technique gives.
As said, snaking is possible, but harder. It also doesn't pay off as big as in the DS version. There is also a fine line between snaking and simple drift boosts. Drift boosts are a standard part of the, and just shows you know your curves. Snaking takes it to an extreme, as you do it even where you're not cornering.
Mario Kart Wii
Your opening paragraph on drifting is simply untrue. "If you don't drift at all, you wont win any races. Ever. "
I just started playing about six weeks ago and never knew what drifting was until tonight. I have unlocked almost all of the game without drifting. Now that I know what it is though... man, I am going to have so much fun!!
I think he means if you use manual mode and do not drift then you won't win. If you're in automatic, then you are drifting every time you take a curve even though you don't have to know it...that's what I understood anyway.
Is there a spindrifting tutorial?
The drifting button is the B button if you use the wheel or remote
What buttons do you press to do drifting, they help you saying how to drift but what are the buttons that you have to press to do a drift and you will win if you don't drift or not I wouldn't be saying that either saying that you won't win any races if you don't drift because i won all 1st place on all of my races and I didn't drift once because I don't know how to drift so saying that you won't win in a race if you don't win that can be wrong and right sometimes but the most important part is what buttons do you press to do drift? : l
How do you get white lines under the bike?
I dont know how to do it once I did it by pressing random buttons and it worked but how do you do it?
@the first person who commented, you know doesn't mean others know right...If you are so good then why go to this website at the first place?
I think he meant the chances. If you don't drift, there is a lower chance that you will win. But if you drift, there is a higher chance that you will win. As for the jump button, if I am not wrong , it is the B button at the back of the wii remote that looks like a switch. (this is just for wii remote, if you are using others then too bad :P)
What is the jump button on the wii so that I can Drift IM trying to learn to drift in automatic GOOd
lol, if you guys played anybody decent online, you would realize how inferior automatic is to manual...and that, against good players, you won't win.
I've gotten at least a one star rating in every grand prix (50cc through mirror) and have a VR rating of 8000, all on auto, so yes, the "can't win ever" comment was highly inaccurate.
However, it's pretty much impossible to unlock all the expert staff time trial ghosts w/o drifting, so I'm finally learning how to use it. Not easy to do after you've already played the game so much...
I just don't know how to drift and I'm searching for a site that explan's me how to drift. I don't know what's the drifting button and I would like to know it.
im guessing all of you saying it is posible to win with out drifting are using automatic were you drift no matter what you do he meant if you turn it on maneule and dont jump or drift the you will not win a single race XD
i won all the grand prix with 1st and i unlocked all the tracks without knowing how to drift. i came to this site to find out how to drift. so dont go and say to everyone that without drifting you wont win
I win most of my races and come 1st in most of them without drifting even in 150cc Special Cup. So it is possible to win without drifting.
I have unlocked all tracks in the grand prix cc by winning 1st,2nd and 3rd on all cups, and I don't know how to drift. So don't go saying that if you can't drift you wont win
